INTRODUCTION
|
|
|
My name is William Post, Jr. (a.k.a. Wally), and I have
expert-level experience in three areas: 1)
market and social science research; 2)
teaching; and 3) solving computer problems related to either software or
hardware. I run my own company
The William Post Group with a focus on meeting clients market and social
science research needs. I am also a
data specialist with the Development Office at Western Michigan University (WMU),
and currently work part-time for the WJSchroer Company in Battle Creek,
MI. Details concerning my duties and experience are discussed below.
As I reached the ABD milestone (with
concentrations in Applied Sociology and Social Problems; and research tools consisting of computer applications and methods of data
collection and analysis), the acquisition of a
full time job, coupled with my other pursuits, has forced me to temporarily
postpone writing a dissertation.

loading and setting up software (National Computing Systems [NCS] Scantools;

for multiple computers. Prior to the Fall 2001 semester, duties included
overseeing data transfers to and from the University mainframe, and running and
maintaining SPSS and SAS batch programs on the mainframe. During the Fall
2001 semester, I handled the migration of report generation from the
mainframe to the PC. I programmed the NCS scanner software to read a new
190 variable survey instrument; wrote the SPSS syntax file (3000 lines of code)
to read the data and generate percentages in Excel; and linked the Excel data to
Word to generate professional reports consisting of 27 tables and a 28 page
appendix for each school district surveyed (100-150 per year). I also use
Mapinfo to geocode various findings (drug and alcohol use, safety and violence
issues) for all or selected school districts for presentations. Duties
also include overseeing the scanning of survey instruments, complex file
management (~ 5000 data files), and troubleshooting all aspects of computer

Self Instruction I began teaching myself about
computers in 1989, when I purchased an obsolete Tandy (8088 chip running at
8Mhz). I have been teaching myself
about computers ever since. I
currently use a Hewlett Packard with a Pentium IV at 2.4 Ghz running Windows XP
at home, and a Dell 2.8 Ghz running Windows XP Professional at work.
I love to explore, experiment, and try new things with computers.
I taught myself how to install and use all of the software programs I now
work with and have worked with in the past, by paying attention to the
documentation, help files, and by experimenting.
I taught myself to create web pages and sites, handle downloading,
decoding, extracting, and unzipping all manner of Internet files; directly from
web sites, from newsgroups, from gopher searches, and from FTP archives.
I also taught myself to do all aspects of troubleshooting both software
and hardware. I continue to explore
and experiment with computers, and I always will.
These experiences resulted in people asking me to troubleshoot their
computers, which has developed into a small part-time business.
